Genepax Co Ltd explained the technologies used in its new fuel cell system "Water Energy System (WES)," which uses water as a fuel and does not emit CO2.

The system can generate power just by supplying water and air to the fuel and air electrodes, respectively, the company said at the press conference, which took place June 12, 2008, at the Osaka Assembly Hall.

The basic power generation mechanism of the new system is similar to that of a normal fuel cell, which uses hydrogen as a fuel. According to Genepax, the main feature of the new system is that it uses the company's membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which contains a material capable of breaking down water into hydrogen and oxygen through a chemical reaction.

Though the company did not reveal the details, it "succeeded in adopting a well-known process to produce hydrogen from water to the MEA," said Hirasawa Kiyoshi, the company's president. This process is allegedly similar to the mechanism that produces hydrogen by a reaction of metal hydride and water. But compared with the existing method, the new process is expected to produce hydrogen from water for longer time, the company said.
With the new process, the cell needs only water and air, eliminating the need for a hydrogen reformer and high-pressure hydrogen tank. Moreover, the MEA requires no special catalysts, and the required amount of rare metals such as platinum is almost the same as that of existing systems, Genepax said.

These are wonderful developments and need to be funded/purchased with great enthusiasm, while keeping the government of the US out of it - completely, other than seeing to it these companies, domestic and foreign, are afforded the greatest tax breaks humanly possible.

Via nuclear generated electricity - at subsidised rates - R&D companies coming up with this genius output should be facilitated and encouraged to the maximum. Transportation costs in the future will simply be another war front for our society.

Bring on the Big Slot-Cars!

This the type of thing I'm waiting for. Hybrids are going to be just a bridge technology. Hydrogen fuel cells or something similar are future of transportation.

This the type of thing I'm waiting for. Hybrids are going to be just a bridge technology. Hydrogen fuel cells or something similar are future of transportation.

Hydrogen is the most abundant fuel in the universe. But basic research into its storage is fundamental to its use.

On earth the most efficient and safest use would be a fuel cell powered by Hydrogen and Oxygen producing electricity as energy to drive the vehicle and water as an waste product .
Small Nuclear plants would breakdown sea water into its component parts and compress and deliver them supplying the needed fuels and the process would also supply all of the fresh water needed by local community's.

Small community's could also cooperate with larger fuel cells suppling electricity and fresh water .By breaking down water fresh or salt we generate energy and recover the original water so nothing is lost !

New Japanese Membrane .

As future research develops newer and more efficient membranes the power and requirements will change .These developments alone will solve our oil dependency in transportation and quiet the cry of the huggers until they discover new outrages !

With this Japanese breakthrough in membranes the system requirements are relaxed somewhat but time will tell the better system technology .
