LITTLE ROCK, Ark. - On a clear Arkansas spring afternoon after a day of horse riding, Wade Earp sighed and said, "I wish we didn't have to have a gay rodeo. I wish we could just rodeo."
Earp was a contestant at the International Gay Rodeo event held last month in Arkansas, a Bible Belt state on the front lines of the fight over gay rights and one of the 13 U.S. states where same-sex marriage is not recognized.
"Everybody deserves equal treatment. Everybody deserves equal rights," said Earp, 45, a native of Benton, Arkansas, where he was raised in a fundamentalist Christian denomination, and a competitor in barrel racing, calf roping and steer riding.
The sixteenth Diamond State Rodeo held in Little Rock drew 75 contestants, far outnumbering spectators, from a dozen states and Canada, all hoping to qualify for the International Gay Rodeo 2016 finals in Las Vegas.
"For years, no one would allow us to advertise it," said Sandy Bidwell, president of the Diamond State event, for fear protesters would create a disturbance.
"My attitude is, let them. It's free advertising."

At a normal rodeo, everyone yells: "Ride that sucker!'

At a gay rodeo, they yell: "Suck that rider!"

It seems they are having this rodeo more to prove a point rather than why all other rodeos are held.

If they get a big turnout, they can claim victory and rejoice that people accept them as they are. If they get a small turn out, they can raise the victim card and say "woe is me. People didn't come to our gay rodeo because they are intolerant homophobic haters".

How about just these gay rough riders just compete in a regular rodeo. If they are good enough riders, it shouldn't matter what their preferences are as long they can compete on a level playing basis. They don't need to shove their gayness in our faces to feel good about themselves.

And if ISIS terrorist sympathizers show up, will they be accused of provoking them?

The gay rodeo is not new, it's been around for a while.

Why do they have to have a special rodeo all to themselves? Aren't they working against their interest of inclusion and equality?

There's a black rodeo, too. It comes to Detroit once in a while. The black rodeo people say they have theirs to appeal to urban black kids who don't usually have access to horses and such, and be role models for black kids who want to pursue that interest. Cowboy Curtis on Pee-Wee's Playhouse was a long time ago. Most people watching the reruns now wouldn't even recognize the guy playing him as Laurence Fishburne, either.
