Low-income households that benefit from the so-called "Obama phone" program could get free broadband service.

The phone service has been in place since the Reagan administration but has become politicized in recent years, due partly to the offering becoming known as "Obama phones." The technical name of the program is "Lifeline."

So who pays for "Obama phones"??? You damn well know the answer, YOU and I do.

Hey, I raised four kids without an Obama phone or internet. People today would go into withdrawal without their phone/internet.

The universal service fee on your phone bills helps fund lifeline.

Way back when I used to work for a large land line carrier (Ameritech/SBC) I helped a few people get discounted rates on phone installation using lifeline. It was designed to help those that were home bound, had medical issues, or could not come up with the huge deposit for a home phone line. They still had to pay their part, there was nothing free at the time.

One of the article comments accuses CNN of being "Fox Noise" for using the term Obamaphone, lol!
