(CNN) A police K-9 died Thursday evening after being left for hours inside his handler's patrol car.

Zane, a 5-year-old bloodhound, was found dead at the handler's residence in Rockdale County, Georgia, according to the Conyers Police Department spokeswoman Kim Lucas.

The bloodhound worked as a tracking dog with the department for four years, three with his handler, Cpl. Jerahmy Williams.

I can understand being exhausted. He had a 12 hour shift, but it should be automatic to get their partner out of the squad car. There was a feature on one of the local stations in Tampa where a reward was offered to anyone who could stay in a hot car, windows rolled up, for 10 minutes or longer. No one passed the test and claimed the reward. Folks were saying how distressed they were and had to come out.

Besides how horrible it is for the poor dog, think of the investment that his department has lost. All that training mounts up. That poor pup, what a terrible ending. If they keep him on the force, he should never be allowed to handle another dog.

lock him in a car in the middle of a concrete parking lot over the lunch hour one day next week. Fire him the day after and then prosecute him for animal cruelty.
