Pope suggests Trump 'is not Christian'

(CNN)Thrusting himself into the combative 2016 presidential campaign, Pope Francis said Thursday that GOP front-runner Donald Trump "is not Christian" if he calls for the deportation of undocumented immigrants and pledges to build a wall between the United States and Mexico.

The Pope, who was traveling back to Rome from Mexico, where he urged the United States to address the "humanitarian crisis" on its southern border, did not tell American Catholics not to vote for Trump.

But Francis left little doubt where he stood on the polarizing issue of immigration reform.

"A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian. This is not the gospel," the Pope told journalists who asked his opinion on Trump's proposals to halt illegal immigration.

Trump immediately fired back, calling Francis' comments "disgraceful."

"No leader, especially a religious leader, should have the right to question another man's religion or faith," he said in statement. Trump added that the government in Mexico, where Francis spent the past five days, has "made many disparaging remarks about me to the Pope."

"If and when the Vatican is attacked by ISIS, which as everyone knows is ISIS's ultimate trophy, I can promise you that the Pope would have only wished and prayed that Donald Trump would have been president," Trump said.

The tussle between Trump and Francis -- two outsized personalities who seldom shy from speaking their minds -- seems to have been building for some time. Before the Pope traveled to Mexico, Trump cast the pontiff as a political naif who "doesn't understand the dangers" at the U.S.-Mexican border.

The Pope, 'The Donald' and the wall between them

Trump social media director Dan Scavino suggested the pontiff's comments were hypocritical. "Amazing comments from the Pope- considering Vatican City is 100% surrounded by massive walls," he tweeted.

Lighten up Francis...

Now, I think the Pope's comment were directly about the wall, not the policy about illegal immigrants in general but I could be wrong. I don't think the pope has the full story about the wall. I think it would be good if the two of them have a meeting. Donald could clear up that he still wants legal immigrants here. Pope Francis can help him repent of his sins, which leads me to the next point.

To be a Christian, you need to believe that Jesus is the savior of the world and you have to be willing to repent of your sins. Donald admitted in an interview that when he does wrong, he tries to make things right to the person he wronged but he doesn't ask God for forgiveness. He's not a Christian. I don't think Donald is trying to deceive anybody, but he really isn't a Christian. He needs to repent of his sins. He might have grown up Presbyterian, but I don't think that church he went to taught him right. Maybe he didn't go enough? I don't know. The thing is Donald Trump just doesn't get it at all in regards to Christianity.

Note: This is NOT why I'm not voting for him. We're electing a president, not a pastor.

And let's make something clear. Jesus Christ, not Trump is the protector of the Vatican and Christianity. Christianity was around long before Trump and it'll be around long after Trump. He really is showing his arrogance here.

Sucks getting a taste of your own medicine, doesn't it, Donald?

Just waiting for the Pope to weigh in on Hillary and Bernie platforms on abortion.

Anytime now, Francis.

Just waiting for the Pope to weigh in on Hillary and Bernie platforms on abortion.

Anytime now, Francis.

You have to remember the context of this. He's been in Mexico the past week and probably very sympathetic toward them.

Pope Francis has continued to condemn abortion, contraception, and homosexuality. Just earlier this week, I read from a liberal friend of mine on Facebook cussing Francis out for saying he was against gay marriage. I was like "In other news, the pope is Catholic." lol.

Pope Francis loses his cool: Pontiff is filmed shouting at Mexico crowd for tugging him and making him fall on to a disabled man

The Pontiff was greeting fans at a stadium in the western city of Morella
At one point along the barrier, members of the crowd pulled on his arms
It caused him to topple onto a wheelchair-bound man in front of him
Pope Francis recovered and kissed the man, but made his irritation known
He yelled the the crowd using Spanish 'Don't be selfish, don't be selfish'
A Vatican spokesman said the Pontiff displayed a 'normal human reaction'

I think part of the Pope's words were left out.

Building walls without building bridges is not Christian.

Seems to me, this whole thing is blown out of proportion. I did a google search and Francis has used the same words in different scenarios about building walls without bridges not being Christian.

2013

“Christians who are afraid to build bridges and prefer to build walls are Christians who are not sure of their faith, not sure of Jesus Christ.” The Pope exhorted Christians to do as Paul did and begin to “build bridges and to move forward”

Did you miss the part where you are not to judge another person's faith?

How long do you think our nation will continue to last without a wall?

I don't know. We have 7000 miles of land borders and I suspect very little is secured.

CA has a small portion of the southern border and they dig tunnels under the fences we do have.

They have to be serious fences like israel is building.

A great comment from Facebook:

No one, and I mean NO ONE, can judge a person's heart and know if they are Christian, except Jesus Christ - God in human flesh! Not a pope, a pastor, or any other person. Only God knows the heart of each human, and only God can judge who has accepted Him as Savior and Lord! Sorry, Pope Francis, but YOU are showing why people scoff at rather than come to Christ! Scripture tells us to "judge not, lest you be judged with that same judgement." I highly doubt the Pope would be happy if he were to be judged as NOT being a Christian! Let God continue to be the judge and spend your time focusing on bringing souls to Christ and ministering to the hurting instead of being involved in politics that don't concern you and coming off as a hypocrite who also lives behind "walls".

Trump should have let it slide. He doesn't have to be confrontational with everyone who criticizes him. You don't look like a wimp if you avoid a public argument with the Pope, you look like a mature adult who picks his battles. He's not running against the Pope.

My real point wasn't that the Pope was being a hypocrite, but that the only person he singled out was Trump.

It's hard to look at him as impartially defending his faith if he is willing to weigh in on Trump's very valid concerns over immigration but cares not a whit to comment on the very un-Christlike stance of the American Democratic Party on any number of issues.

I don't see how somebody who whines as much as he does can be president. Seriously. He thinks Fox and the GOP are "unfair." He's not ready for the left or for foreign leaders.

That's because this Pope is a Marxist and wouldn't dare speak out against the Democrats or any other leftist regime. He only seems to speak out against conservative ideals. The only conservative thing he's ever mentioned was abortion which he calls murder. I left the Catholic church back in mid 90's and more and more it looks like it was a good thing for me.
