The outcome comes after two weeks of testimony in a first-of-its-kind case where discussions of newsworthiness and decency dominated.

Weighing free speech against privacy, a Florida jury has decided to uphold the sanctity of the latter by turning in a $115 million verdict against Gawker over its 2012 posting of a Hulk Hogan sex tape.

Hogan brought the case three years ago after Gawker, a 13-year-old digital news site founded by Nick Denton, an entrepreneur with an allergy to celebrity privacy, published a video the wrestler claimed was secretly recorded. The sex tape was sensational, showing Hogan — whose real name is Terry Bollea — engaged in sexual intercourse with Heather Cole, the then-wife of his best friend, Tampa-area radio shock jock Bubba the Love Sponge (real name: Todd Alan Clem). Gawker's posting of the Hogan sex tape was accompanied by an essay from then–editor-in-chief A.J. Daulerio about celebrity sex and a vivid play-by-play of the encounter between Hogan and Cole.

One can hope. Or at least hope that Soros and other ideologues are forced to burn $150M-$200M propping up or recreating Gawker 2.0, $$ that might do greater damage doing worse mischief.

Did they actually have any buyers? I love the Hulkster, but he's not exactly in his prime.

Hi there. You may have read in the news today that Gawker Media, which owns Jezebel, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. This news is true, and will allow the company to restructure, but it won’t affect our day to day here at Jezebel. We’ll continue blogging here every day with the same, excellent staff, and we hope you’ll continue reading and commenting here every day.

Hogan will probably never collect a penny. I'm glad that SR and I used one of our Groupons at Hogan's restaurant near Tampa, Hogan's Beach, before it was closed. It was a great place with really great burgers. They must have really been trying to drive business with the Groupon thing, got 2 burgers (anything on the menu) and 2 beers for $15. We also got to see his display of his wrestling championship belts. In the words of Trump, they were "amazing". :biggrin-new:

Gawker Media is also seeking a purchaser. I wonder what would happen to this judgment. A bankruptcy might nullify the monetary award, but I don't think a buy-out would, and a sale that transferred assets while leaving a shell to which the judgment applied would probably not hold up in court.

I can't say I'm sad that Hogan and Gawker are consuming each others' assets in this court fight.

Standing on the sidelines with popcorn, eh? :smile-new:

A new buyer might not be able to set aside the verdict but they might be able to pay pennies on the dollar. Vulture capitalist Paul Singer manages to buy companies in bankruptcy, settle for pennies, and make a fortune in the process. He's recently screwed Argentina:
