Climate change sends lemming numbers plunging

For six months of the year, the Arctic animals live in burrows in the snow. They usually have a population peak every three to four years, but the last peak was in 1994. To find out why, a team led by Nils Stenseth from the University of Oslo in Norway studied meteorological data from 1970 onwards and compared it with Norwegian lemming numbers.

They found that snowfall patterns have changed, producing more compact snow that prevents lemmings creating their holes (Nature, DOI: 10.1038/nature07442). Stenseth says climate change is to blame, adding that the decline will affect the Arctic fox and snowy owl, which prey on lemmings.

If they survived the medieval warm period, they'll survive this.
