Lidl issues scavenger poisoned food apology

"This is just so upsetting and distressing. We're talking about people who have to dig in garbage containers to find food to eat,"

Discount German supermarket chain Lidl has issued an apology after workers at one of its Swedish stores deliberately poisoned discarded food in a bid to keep homeless people at bay.

"Lidl Sweden has been informed that cleaning liquids have been poured into the trash to stop trespassers from stealing garbage at one of our stores during a short time period," Mathias Kivikoski, Lidl's chief executive in Sweden, said in a statement.

"We deeply regret what has happened and this is not something the company recommends or permits," it added.

A newspaper in the Stockholm suburb of Solna revealed that Lidl employees at a local store had become tired of homeless people searching trash bins had last week begun pouring toxic cleaning products on discarded food.

They put up a sign near the bins warning that the goods had been poisoned, but it remained unclear if anyone had eaten the food, the Mitt i Solna paper reported.

Food had disappeared from the bins after the staff began poisoning it, it said.

Rolf Nilsson, who heads a Stockholm homeless organization, described the employees' actions as "crazy."

"This is just so upsetting and distressing. We're talking about people who have to dig in garbage containers to find food to eat," Nilsson told the Aftonbladet daily.

Wait a minute. Nobody in Sweden has to dig though garbage containers to find food so what difference does it make how the employees handle the garbage?

Something isn't adding up here.

Ghana rallies to help Sweden

People in Africa are reaching out to help the less fortunate citizens of faraway Sweden.

The Ghana branch of HelpSweden recently held a charity event to raise money for needy people in cold and barren Sweden. Money was collected in tip cups on behalf of poor Swedes, and Swedish foodstuffs like blueberry soup and crisp bread were sold to raise money for the starving—especially the children--in this part of cold and barren Scandinavia.

These are just some of the unusual news events described on a fictitious web page launched via Facebook and YouTube on Wednesday, in an ironic campaign intended to put development aid for Africa high on the agenda when Sweden takes over the presidency of the EU next year, in 2009.

“The campaign was made to encourage a new perspective on aid, and to highlight the fact that more money flows out of Africa than comes into those countries, as well as the relationship between the global North and the global South,“ says Klas Waldenström, a project manager for the campaign launched by the UN Development Programme (UNDP) in Sweden.

The idea of promoting social issues with humour and satire is brilliant. A laugh can help one recognize the absurdity of widespread poverty. After all, the fact that we happen to live in a country where people have more than enough to eat is mainly an accident of geography and history, not our God-given privilege.

The website www.helpsweden.org includes an amusing video of the purported rally in Ghana, and a link to a letter that can be forwarded to Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt.snip

Something isn't adding up here.Sweeden is supposed to be a socialist utopia! There should be no one at all digging through garbage! UNLESS - socialism just plain doesn't work - but but but but but but how can that be?

I have relatives in Sweden and I've lived there. There is no reason for anyone to eat garbage unless........they want to circumvent the highly oppressive do-gooder hoops they have to jump through to partake of the socialist banquet. So, these are kids (probably) who are squatting and avoiding all the numerous programs designed to make them productive little worker bees. ;)
