Public art getting plenty of public feedback

DENVER - Near the base of the 16th Street pedestrian bridge in Denver stands National Velvet, a piece of art the city of Denver recently dedicated. Standing 20-feet high, the red collection of uniquely stacked sand bags is getting a lot of attention.

"We were just driving buy and we saw the glowing red objects," said art teacher Chris Lewis.

"I think it's disgusting," said Amy Berglund, who lives in the neighborhood.

The city of Denver spent roughly $50,000 to bring National Velvet to the public. When it was dedicated on Nov. 18, the city issued a news release describing the work by artist John McEnroe.

It read in part:

"Artist John McEnroe's latest public sculpture, National Velvet, provides downtown Denver with a striking new work of art that continues the artist's trademark unorthodox approach to materials, form and contemporary ideas. Utilizing sand as the building blocks for a dynamic new visual motif, National Velvet conjures up multiple interpretations through its towering form and the tendrils that spiral through it. Viewers will delight in the sheer scale and playfulness of the work, the dominant red-hue piercing through the sky, both through the day and when lit from within at night."

Berglund didn't quite agree with the city's take on the piece. She sent a letter to the city. One question read: "Have you lost all respect for yourself and the constituents you serve that you would choose to use our tax dollars for this disgusting display?"

Lewis doesn't see why people like Berglund are fussing.

"To me as an artist, you're better off making a statement that people talk about as opposed to something that people don't even notice when they walk by. Maybe it's a good distraction, from all the hard times we're going through right now, it'll give people something trivial to worry about," said Lewis.

The comments are hilarious! This has been getting a lot of talk in the state. The mayor of Denver is so strapped for cash that he's trying to get city employees to take leave without pay and yet the city went ahead with the giant penis artwork anyway. Denver taxpayers are furious and the chattering classes are trying to tell the taxpayers that they just don't understand transgressive 'art'.

You can imagine how well that's going over. :D

Maybe they can sell it to Boulder. They'd LOVE it up there.

Pretty much all the art work in Boulder is already penile-centric, so they don't need it. It's also why the rest of the state considers them to be dick heads in a fairly literal way.

Having seen the women in Boulder, I can not imagine that penii are very popular up there.

Must be for the "males".

More unintended penis art:

If you approach the William Penn statue atop Phillys city hall at the right angle, it looks like his junk is sticking out of his pants. Here's the best pic I could find but there are better.

It's actually his right hand stretched out over the city.
