C-130s and A-10s were designed, among many other things, to be able to land and take off from very primitive or chewed up facilities. I imagine F-18s are a bit more rugged - due to the realities of carrier landings - than F-15s and F-16s. Then there's AV-8Bs and V-22s.

Nothing new really. Towards the end of WW2 in Europe, the Luftwaffe used the Autobahn as makeshift airfields when their airbases became unusable.
