View Full Version : Obama To Buy Wife $30,000 Ring For Support

Michelle Obama is to receive this £20,000 thank you from her husband for her support during the election.

The Harmony ring is made of rhodium - the world's most expensive metal --and encrusted with diamonds. It is being hastily made by Italian designer Giovanni Bosco in time for January's inauguration ceremony.

Only about 25 tons of rhodium are mined each year, mostly in South Africa, and as a result its price is typically around £5,000 an ounce.

Something tells me we won't be hearing the DUmp screech about this. They were all over how George W. Bush was waging wars just to supposedly enhance his own wealth, when in reality GWB wore a $50 Timex Indiglo and found contentment clearing brush at his ranch.

What total hypocrites liberals are, but we all know that already, don't we?

I have no problem making expenditures on jewelry, or anyone else doing it. I do have a problem being told that I have to "share the wealth" by a guy who can afford to drop $30k on a single piece of jewelry, but doesn't think that my taxes are high enough.

Something tells me we won't be hearing the DUmp screech about this. They were all over how George W. Bush was waging wars just to supposedly enhance his own wealth, when in reality GWB wore a $50 Timex Indiglo and found contentment clearing brush at his ranch.

Yes, we do. What will be really funny is how they will justify this: "We just can't have the leader of the free world and the First Lady wearing something as common as gold, obviously. The bling sends a message, and that message is, 'Yes, I can wear as much bling as I want to, because I'm in charge.' Have to represent to those foreign leaders who wear Rolexes, right?"

Let's see if they're still outraged about the GOP's $150,000 wardrobe buy for the Palin family after this.

Nobody thinks that a prep school educated, Harvard law grad and bestselling author is a "man of the people". Still less if that guy wins the presidency of the United States. Obama can easily afford this piece.

I'm just amused that people seem to be in awe of the rhodium angle. Rhodium is expensive because very little of it is needed for anything. It's one of the more common plating materials for jewelry - including your ultra cheap jewelry. Both wildly expensive platinum and the average St. Michael medal are plated with rhodium.

If you want to get all the visual bling factor of Michelle's new ring, you can do it with laboratory-created diamonds in a white gold setting plated with our friend rhodium for around $1,500 bucks. :D

I had a girlfriend right after I got out of prison that liked to design her own jewelry. The day she met my mom she was wearing five rings. Two on one hand, three on the other. My momed loved them and asked her how much they were. She said that she had about $60K on her hands. Of course, the woman owned two Caddilac dealerships and never tried to pass herself off as common or even caring about the common folk.

A lot different when you point out the evil rich who spend too much money and then spend $30K on a ring.

M21
12-02-2008, 11:47 AM
OK folks a bit of reality check. 30K for a wedding ring, while seemingly a lot of money, really isn't all that. How much did you pay for the car you drive to work? Isn't your wife worth it?

In the big scheme of things it's his money to do with as he pleases and if it pleases her then who am I to judge his motivation.

Pretty much as expected. The minute any flack pops up, they deny it. Of course, the only one who really takes a hit here is Michelle. What does she think about her pansy assed husband who promised her this ring and now takes it back because of "what they might say." What a dickless piece of shit and I am probably not to far off in saying that Michelle probably agrees with me.

The guy does not even have the balls to say, "So fucking what? I bought her a ring she deserves." Oh yeah, that would involve actually taking a definate stand. Why start now?

It's Ebonics for "teeth." And $30K is not an outrageous expenditure if you're buying a car, paying for a wedding or a funeral or building an addition on your house. For a piece of jewelry, it's pretty frivolous, especially if your economic philosophy tends towards the socialist.

It's outrageous if your double income is barely within shouting distance of $100K but it's not a big deal if you and your spouse are millionaires (they are). The bizarre aspect to this story is the media interest. It's one thing for us to sit around chatting about the Obamas' poor taste in fine jewelry but it's something else for the media to spend time on it.

Really, it's their money and they can spend it anyway they want to spend it. It's still ugly, though. :)

Again, the only outrage is that the Obamas demand that we get by on less, spread our wealth around, pay more taxes (it's patriotic, according to Biden) and chose service over wealth (except for military service), and then blow what is essentially six months' pay for the average family on a piece of bling. If they want to conspicuously consume, that's fine, but then don't tell me that I'm making too much and that I have to "give back" to the community.

With the amount that congress is spending now on bailouts, we're looking at a projected deficit of over $1.3 trillion this year. Maybe Obama is going to continue to run record deficits throughout his administration, cut spending or embrace supply-side economics and institute further tax cuts as a stimulus, but even if he doesn't institute a tax hike this year, he's planning on letting the Bush tax cuts expire in 2011, which is going to raise taxes across the board. OTOH....

Actually, he's altered his stance (http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/business/energy/6143060.html) on that one.

It's actually a logical position, since oil prices have halved in the last few months, there's no windfall profits to tax, so don't implement it. Of course, the KOssacks and DUmpsters are going to go ballistic when they find out that the class war is over before it's begun.

"Taxing the rich" is just another way of taxing everyone because business owners (rich or not) will pass the extra tax burden on to the consumer. It always amuses me when the DUers go on and on about corporate welfare without realizing that raising corporate taxes merely drives up consumer prices. Those corporations don't pay taxes.

But people making $60K and less will be taxed more, because increased corporate taxes are passed on in increased costs to consumers. That's how the VAT works in Europe. The most obvious example is gasoline taxes, which are supposedly paid by the oil companies, but all they do is increase the price at the pump and turn that amount over to the government. Taxing a corporation doesn't take money out of their pockets (except to the extent that it causes a drop in the demand for their products), it just turns them into an adjunct of the IRS.

2nd statement: No doubt the next 4 years is going to be a roller coaster ride. The only way to make it a bit smoother is if conservative Republicans hold the majority of the seats in Congress on 2010 (don't forget that a handful number of seats in both the Senate and House of Rep. will be up for election in 2010 :)).

Your first statement: the money he spends comes from responsible citizens that work ceaselessly to make ends meet for their families and themselves  (which is just about every member here on this forum).

Got to interject a little perspective here: he is a wealthy man partly because of his various political jobs but mostly because of his books (recently) and other sources of income (wife's jobs). Michelle (bless her heart) isn't getting that ugly ring on our dime. Thankfully.

If I'm going to trick out the First Lady, I want a little more craftsmanship and style. ;)

Couldn't do it. The Obamaniacs would never allow it on Fox. It would have to be the follow on for Heroes or Fringe.

It's from when Family Guy was actually still funny. For those who don't get the reference, just google "Diamonds: She'll pretty much have to", it's the first youtube video that pops up. Hilarious and so true. :D

I propose her for Secretary of Bling.

Speaking of bling, one of today headlines is "Sarkozy Morphs From ‘President Bling-Bling’ to WorkerChampion (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&sid=a1h2BUaxX.wM&refer=exclusive)":D
