Thousands of orders have been issued to the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives (ATF) to seize guns sold to individuals who should not have been allowed to purchase them.

According to a report from USA Today, the number of orders reached a 10-year high last year as the FBI provided ATF agents with 4,170 directives. The report says the weapons were seized because their owners did not qualify due to mental health problems, criminal backgrounds or other concerns.

“These are people who shouldn’t have weapons in the first place, and it just takes one to do something that could have tragic consequences,” a former ATF official, David Chipman, told the USA Today. “You don’t want ATF to stand for ‘after the fact.'”

The number of prohibited purchases which were successfully seized last year was not reported, as only the number of directives was known. The number of guns involved is also unknown, as some purchases may have involved multiple firearms.
