Coal ash spill causes outcry

Millions of gallons of ash sludge poured through a broken dike at a coal plant Monday in Tennessee, fueling outcries from environmentalists, including critics of Santee Cooper's proposed Pee Dee plant, who say the breach exposes the dangers of coal ash.

The spill happened at Tennessee Valley Authority's coal plant west of Knoxville when an earthen wall failed after heavy rains. The berms held 2.6 million cubic yards of ash from the coal plant's boilers — a retention ash pond with dikes similar to those at five Lowcountry coal plants.

Read the official statement from the Tennessee Valley Authority regarding Tuesday's ash spill at the Kingston Fossil Plant.

"What happened in Tennessee could happen at the Pee Dee plant," said Nancy Cave, a project director with the Coastal Conservation League. "As we have said, there is no such thing as 'clean' coal, and this is a perfect example of that."

The video is astounding.... this looks like a huge disaster. It doesn't seem this has been widely reported for some reason.

Guess the people in Tennessee were naughty this year... sorry couldnt help it;)

My gosh! That entire area was inundated! Massive!
I did see a mention of a 'sludge pond' breech on Fox's crawl at the bottom.

That place had to be pretty smelly even before the breech?

According to some other articles I saw, they say 'environmentalists say the spill was 30 times larger than the Exxon valdez oil spill'.... if this is true, this is one of the largest ecological disasters we have seen in this country.

This has implications for more people than just the couple homes that got uprooted... the river is a major source of drinking water, and its just been contaminated with some nasty nasty stuff.

COVINA, Calif. – A man dressed as Santa Claus opened fire at a Christmas Eve party in a suburban Los Angeles home that subsequently caught fire, leaving three people dead, police said Thursday.

Police said they were seeking a person of interest, 45-year-old Bruce Jeffrey Pardo. Pardo, described by police as armed and dangerous, is the estranged husband of a person who may have been at the party.

"He was going through some type of marital problems, and we believe that this residence is a relative's residence," Lt. Pat Buchanan said.

The gunman arrived at the party in Covina late Wednesday and immediately opened fire with a handgun, Buchanan said. Witnesses told police that the man took off the Santa suit and left the scene in street clothes.

Wrong BOZO; the residents get their drinking water from the Kingston Water Treatment Plant. Test by the state, the TVA and the EPA have been reviewed and they have determined that the water is safe to drink. These agencies are still monitoring the situation.

That ash will counter-act the acid rain the enviros were so sure would kill us. :rolleyes:
