European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs Pierre Moscovici has gone on the attack once again, claiming that “war” could come to Europe should populist anti-establishment parties win in the upcoming European Parliament elections.

Mr Moscovici refused to identify any parties or politicians by name but addressed “populists” and “nationalists” at a meeting of the Centre for European Reform saying nationalists would impose a “national preference” that could both lead to the destruction of the European Union and potentially to “war,” Il Giornale reports.

“If we reintroduce divisions between us, North-South, East-West, and if national preference becomes Europe’s way of thinking, Europe will die,” Moscovici said

Hopefully he will still be alive when the European sheep get invaded by an army from the middle east.

Europe has already been invaded by an army from the Middle East.

In a round about way he is correct. It's not a question of reject nationalism OR war. The rise of nationalism might bring war sooner rather than later. The EU and NATO are hanging together by a thread. The rise of multiple nationalist regimes will weaken the EU and NATO and could trigger the final breakup.

How fragile is the EU and NATO?

The EU has several sovereign debt crisis, a bank solvency crisis and numerous looming bailouts that border on "too big to save". Germany is the piggy-bank and financial/economic engine of the EU. They are facing an energy crisis. After Fukushima, they have shutdown many of their nuclear plants and the remainder will go in the next few years. Their "solution" has been to sink hundreds of billions into clean renewables which are not outputing at full capacity; too many cloudy days. So they have partnered with Russia in building two natural gas pipelines under the Baltic Sea. One was completed in 2011 and the other nears completion. These will completely compensate the loss of nuclear power. The Russian goal in this project is to finish off NATO. A Polish Defense Minister has compared it to the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact. If the Russians move on Ukraine or the Baltic states, Germany will have a choice: stay out or lights out. While America might send military supplies to Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic states I don't see President Trump engaging in a war in a Europe which has made itself the energy vassal of Russia.

The Soviet Union was an expansionist power with global aspirations. The Russians just want their old neighborhood back. Where is our national interest? Massive American ground troops in eastern Europe? I don't see that happening.
