"A television station in Rochester, New York, fired a meteorologist Sunday after he used a racial slur on air.
During WHEC-TV's Friday evening broadcast, Jeremy Kappell said "Martin Luther Coon Park," when referring to a downtown Rochester park named after slain civil rights movement leader Martin Luther King Jr."

I personally think it was an overreaction. He misspoke, apologized, it should be over.

I've heard of Freudian slips but this one couldn't have been worse. He could have made an honest mistake but it doesn't matter. He offended a protected class and now his career is over.

In related goofy news, the NY Times crossword contained a "potentially offensive" answer on the 2nd or 3rd of January. The answer was "beaner". It was phrased properly.
