The State of California has now spent over $5 billion on its long-delayed high-speed rail project — roughly the same amount of money that Democrats are refusing to provide President Donald Trump for his border wall proposal.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority, which intends to connect San Francisco to Los Angeles with a bullet train, was approved by voters in a 2008 referendum. However, barely any of it has been built. The cost of the train continues to rise; the technical difficulties continue to mount; and the public remains unconvinced of its value.

$5B is about enough to build the dedicated yard tracks and shops at one end, one train set of rolling stock, and put out the initial scoping contract for the master control system and get to some not-final state of developing it. Not enough left after that for a grade crossing, let alone any track miles in an urban corridor. I.e. enough for a static display of 'The Train of Tomorrow.' The money would go a lot farther anywhere else (Except Chicago or the NYC metro area, between graft and mob-controlled unions), and take half as much time thanks to CA's endless permitting regime, but it still wouldn't fund any significant operating segment.
