Either way a vet involved. We don't allow DIY surgery on humans, either.
I don't have a problem with docking or even de-barking. I just don't think that amateurs need to be involved.
yea but the indignation is not centered around them doing it themselves - it's around them doing it at all.

No, not really. I see the whole human piercing thing as another symptom of look-at-me sexual deviance. So, it's distasteful to see a human sexual fetish imposed on a pet.

so then the objection is superficial - your real objection is to the whole concept of piercings rather than the armature surgery aspect.
ETA - we used to have a show cat that has his ears pierced . . . .
