Wallow Fire Grows to 400,000 Acres
This is well on it's way to becoming Arizona's largest wildfire in history. 'Tis the season for our state to go up in flames!
Arizona fires: Wallow Fire continues to grow
Fire crews fighting the mammoth Wallow Fire face another day of winds and low humidity Wednesday, a day after the blaze continued its relentless advance and forced the evacuation of a major part of Eagar amid rolling power outages and reports of gasoline shortages.
The fire slowed overnight, with lower winds allowing firefighters to complete a backburn outside of Eagar and clear flammable grasses and bushes from the area, said a fire spokeswoman Wednesday morning .
Residents on the southern side of Eagar were told to leave Tuesday as the blaze pressed unabated toward the White Mountain town and nearby Springerville.
Electricity began cutting on and off in both towns Tuesday evening as officials tested the power grid, which they fear could be threatened by the flames. Gasoline supplies were reportedly running low.
The fire, growing by the hour, leapt farther north Tuesday and has now consumed about 389,000 acres, with at least 11 structures burned and 588 more threatened by the flames. Authorities would today and Thursday meet with residents of the towns most affected and discuss what structures have been lost.
