I had to stop and think after reading this post. We had the same situation. My maternal grandmother lived with us when I was a kid. It was just an accepted fact that that was how it should be. When I was about 12 or 13, she had to go into a nursing home due to what today is called Alzheimers.

From my earliest memories, we lived next door to my paternal grandparents and their single daughter lived with them.
Grandma passed in December and the Doc said that when Grandpa did not wake up one morning in Jan that it nothing more than a broken heart.
Shortly after that, we moved next door to the maternal grandparents and stayed as Granddad passed and Grandmother ended up in the home. That was well after I left to marry and raise my family.
Unluckily for both my parents and my wife's, they all passed far too soon for us to have any years back together
