1863 - Maj. Santos Benavides led 79 men in the Thirty-third Texas Cavalry across the Rio Grande in pursuit of the bandit Octaviano Zapata. The next day Benavides caught up to Zapata near Mier, Tamaulipas. After a brief gunfight Zapata and 9 others were dead and all other Zapatistas dispersed.
1889 - The Waco suspension bridge crossing the Brazos River opened as a free bridge. It had been a toll bridge before being sold to the city of Waco for $1.
1917 - In Houston, William Ashton Vinson and James A. Elkins founded a law firm. The firm became one of the largest and most profitable law firms in the world.
