This is the central issue. Not too many politicians I know of would actually want to tackle this sucking chest wound.
Harper Woods and most (not all) of the Grosse Pointes are on the East Side. It could be argued that the East Side is worse than the rest of the area, but that isn't necessarily the case as the entire area has degraded into something approaching anarchy.
Got a problem? Need to have the cops come out and deal with that problem? Don't hold your breath -- which is why vigilantism is making a comeback in this shitstain city. People who are stuck in that hellhole find it necessary to engage the crack addicts and muggers when they come crashing through the door of the shack they call home.
Coleman Young's thuggery and criminal behavior, along with 40 years of "where's my free shit?" created this mess. No single politician is going to fix any of this, which explains why you've got convicted felons who are winning elections. Nobody gives a shit.
We tried to tackle it Eupher. We passed the Emergency Manager law. It basically gave the state the authority to say Detroit (or any other city withing the state) had fucked itself so far it can no longer correct itself, and the state was stepping it to put it back on track.
Detroit voters just repealed that law. It's like their intent on riding that derailed train over the cliff.
The previous law, used by Engler and Granholm to take over various cities and school boards, is still on the books. A city can still be taken over, but I think there are more limits on the power than the proposed constitutional amendment that failed on Tuesday.
One of the problems with Detroit's government is that Dave Bing is a pretty reasonable guy-he's not a criminal or a thug. He's willing to work with the governor. However, he has a city council that has been filled with criminals and thugs for the past 20 years or so. They block every reform he tries to make.
Right now, the cops are suing Bing/the city over budget cuts to their department.
