What is this used for?
It looks like a gauge you'd find on an aircraft's control panel. I believe it's called a Vertical Speed Indicator.
Well there are no numbers on the dial so i would think it is a guessonometer!

It is used in sailplanes to determine whether you are rising or sinking. The audio feature is really handy (I have many hours in sailplanes) in that it allows you to keep your eyes looking outside. Sometimes sailplanes fly in groups (gaggles) and can get quite close together.
The audio is silent when you are sinking and then begins beeeep....beeep... beeep when you begin to rise. What you do then is circle back to the lift you found, bank hard over and ride the thermal up. The beeping gets higher in pitch and closer together as lift increases. Finally, when you are going up at about 1000 ft/min the thing is just singing its head off!
