The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. was dedicated 31 years ago today
On Nov. 13, 1982, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. was dedicated, inscribed with the names of the 57,939 Americans who died in the conflict.
The dedication was near the end of a weeklong national salute to Americans who had fought in the conflict. The memorial listed the names of those who had died in order of death instead of rank.
At first many veterans were opposed to architecture student Maya Lin’s design for the memorial, which lacked the standard statues and other markings of a memorial. Over time, public opinion shifted, as veterans and families made etchings of the names of those they lost. As visitors looked at the black-granite of the monument, they could see themselves reflected back through it.
It's emotional to see. I seen it during my senior trip in high school.
