Andrew Cuomo Now Giving Away Ventilators

    (Story date 4/15/2020)

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said on Wednesday at a press conference that he would start giving away ventilators to other states during the coronavirus crisis.

“We’ve stabilized our healthcare situation. New York had one of the earlier curves. There are other places in this country that are now seeing increases in the death rate,” Cuomo said, explaining why he was ready to donate ventilators.

Cuomo announced he would send 100 ventilators to Michigan and 50 ventilators to Maryland.

Cuomo spent weeks spreading the alarm that there might not be enough ventilators for New York, demanding that the federal government provide him 30,000 to 40,000 ventilators for his stockpile.

The Trail Leading Back to the Wuhan Labs

There’s no proof the coronavirus accidentally escaped from a laboratory, but we can’t take the Chinese government’s denials at face value.

It is understandable that many would be wary of the notion that the origin of the coronavirus could be discovered by some documentary filmmaker who used to live in China. Matthew Tye, who creates YouTube videos, contends he has identified the source of the coronavirus — and a great deal of the information that he presents, obtained from public records posted on the Internet, checks out.

The Wuhan Institute of Virology in China indeed posted a job opening on November 18, 2019, “asking for scientists to come research the relationship between the coronavirus and bats.”

The Google translation of the job posting is: “Taking bats as the research object, I will answer the molecular mechanism that can coexist with Ebola and SARS- associated coronavirus for a long time without disease, and its relationship with flight and longevity. Virology, immunology, cell biology, and multiple omics are used to compare the differences between humans and other mammals.” (“Omics” is a term for a subfield within biology, such as genomics or glycomics.)
There is a translation of the main research direction for the above and a second add placed December 24 2019

In the past two decades, coronaviruses have produced three deadly global epidemics: SARS, MERS and now Covid-19. If you’re wondering what it is about this family of viruses that makes it produce such deadly pathogens — and what about them might hinder their spread — here are a few things you should know.
    The article is rather long.

One thing struck me is that it was in The New York Times.

The other is I ran across many news stories saying that the Wuhan - CCP virus mutates slowly.

I've read a little about the virus, What I do remember is that it is an RNA virus, whatever that means and that RNA viruses mutate quickly.

Given what has occurred previously with MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV, it’s likely to spread from person-to-person, including within the United States
. In other words, these viruses mutate and change at a high rate, which can create havoc for both diagnostic detection as well as therapy (and vaccine) regimens.

Just funny that the WHO said no person to person transmission 1/14/2020 yet it was posited to do as of 1/31/2020.

Interesting article regarding SARS written by Chinese scientists in 2005.

They have been working with Wuhan - CCCP type viruses for a long time.

The Swedish experiment looks like it’s paying off

The country’s Public Health Agency and the ‘state epidemiologist’, Anders Tegnell, have kept their cool and still don’t recommend a lockdown. They are getting criticised by scientific modellers but the agency is sticking to its own model of how the virus is expected to develop and what pressure hospitals will be under. The government still heeds the agency’s advice; no party in the opposition argues for a lockdown. Rather, opinion polls show that Swedes remain strongly in favour of the country’s liberal approach to the pandemic.

I think this is what I stated way back when.

    Interesting info/observations/slight rant

Texas is trying to slowly re-open. I've been out and about the edges of the DFW metroplex for this whole debacle, and have not seen much slow down. Walmart, Home Depot and the big grocery stores are usually busy, drive through lines are active, and the streets are busy. Not full bore, pots of closed shops, salons, clubs, ect.

Blessed me, my wife and I are both teachers, so we have work and paychecks still. Only a couple of weeks of school left, everything is online. During a meeting this week, some virtual training was mentioned that needs to be completed ASAP, per district instruction. I had missed that one, went in to work on it, and it is lots of "how to take care of our ELL (English language learners) over the internet". This concerns me because, along with a few other blips and lack of commitment, I question of our schools will be opening back up in August. My district is definately prepping for either starting back online or having to return to online only in the future.

My wife teaches sped pre-K kids, and is putting in a ridiculous amount of work doing video classes, meets, and stupid paperwork. Many of her kids have goals that can't be done through a screen, but state and fed rules say she has to figure out a way to help with those goals. Some parents are really stepping up to the plate, others not so much.

I teach at a disciplinary campus, we get kids who get in trouble and are sent to us for a little bit to deal with stricter rules and separated from their friends. Many of them don't want to be in school to begin with, and getting them to work in face to face situations is hard. Getting those students to log into a computer to do work is proving impossible. If everything is online in August, we will only get kids who have legal charges not bad enough to go to JJ (juvenile justice, actual kid jail), or ones making online threats.

Hopefully our district is just erring on the side of caution, but we definately seem to be prepping for empty buildings in August, which concerns me greatly.

    /end rant

South African brewer says it may dump 400M bottles of beer (34 million gallons)

South African Breweries, one of the world’s largest brewers, says it may have to destroy 400 million bottles of beer as a result of the country’s ban on alcohol sales that is part of its lockdown measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus.
