A new weather term that I'd never heard (derecho) for that horrible storm that passed through yesterday.

The wicked winds of a rare derecho roared hundreds of miles across the Midwest on Monday, flipping vehicles, damaging property*and leaving over a million without power.

The National Weather Service's (NWS) Storm Prediction Center (SPC) said Tuesday morning that the "intense derecho" traveled from southeast South Dakota all the way to Ohio, a path of 770 miles in 14 hours.

Along the way, the inland storm produced widespread damaging wind gusts, including numerous gusts over 75 mph -- hurricane force -- and several over 90 mph in central Iowa.

Lost power at work about 10:45 in the morning, was off at home as well until almost midnight. A 30 foot tree limb hit the back of my house. Thankfully the butt of it must have hit the ground first to soften the blow.

The thing was moving so fast, it hit Chicago about 3 hours later and later Indiana and Ohio.

It's weird that it never hit Detroit. Usually fast moving storms pick up steam over Lake Michigan, but we didn't even get any rain out of it. Just some clouds. I think West Michigan got some of it.

We had one of those about 8 years ago. Knocked out our electric for over a week.
