Number Of Firms In Peanut Butter Products Recall Hit 20

Washington, D.C. (AHN) - Two more firms on Wednesday recalled products containing peanut butter made by Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), the source of salmonella outbreak in 43 states that sickened more than 400 people last year.

According to the Food and Drug Administration website, NutriSystem Inc., a leading provider of weight management products and services, voluntary recalled its NutriSystem-branded Peanut Butter Granola Bar 1.41 ounces or 40 grams packaged in flexible film and with lot codes TC08158A, TC08188A, TC09158A, TC09168A, TC09178A, TC11148A and TC11178A.

Blanton's Candies of Sweetwater, Tennessee also recalled approximately 1,400 pounds of Blanton's Peanut Butter Sticks packaged in 8 ounce cellophane bags. The Peanut Butter Sticks were distributed in Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Virginia, North Carolina, and Florida through retail stores. The two firms bring to 20 the number of companies that have announced voluntary recall of 125 products containing PCA peanut butter since last week. On Tuesday seven firms, including one from Canada, also recalled similar products on fears they are tainted with salmonella. Country Maid Inc. recalled its 2-pound packages of Classic Breaks Peanut Butter Cookie Dough distributed nationwide through fundraising groups from Oct. 6, 2008 through Jan. 9, 2009. PetSmart recalled seven of its Grreat Choice® Dog Biscuits sold between Aug. 21, 2008 and Jan. 19, 2009. Nature's Path Organic Foods of Richmond, British Columbia, Canada recalled its Optimum Energy Bars Peanut Butter in 2-ounce packs and marked with the "Best before date of "01OCT094." Ready Pac Foods Inc. recalled its Ready Pac Cool Cuts Celery with Peanut Butter 12/6.75 oz., Trader Joe's Celery with Peanut Butter 12/6.75 and 30/6.75 oz., Eating Right Apples with Peanut Butter 12/6.75 oz., and Eating Right Celery with Peanut Butter 12/6.75 oz. Premier Nutrition recalled selected Twisted and Titan-branded bars. Boca Grande Foods recalled its Poco Pac, and Grande Gourmet Peanut Butter products. Dinners Ready Meridian recalled its Asian Marinated Flank Steak, Indonesian Chicken and Chicken Satay Prepared Meals. Weis Markets recalled its Weis Quality (WQ) Cheese Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers and WQ Toasted Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers. Other firms that have recalled some of their products suspected of being contaminated with salmonella are Abbott Nutrition, Clif Bar & Co., Evening Rice Bread Co., Hy-Vee Inc., Kellogg, K-Fat Inc., Kroger, McKee Foods Corp., Meijer, Perry's Ice Cream Co., Ralcorp Frozen Bakery, South Bend Chocolate Co., and PCA itself.
