I don't think it's extortion to expect a kid to hold up his end as a family member. Slovenly rooms should only be tolerated if the parents are equally slovenly, and somehow I don't think that applies in this situation.

Close the door and leave it to the pigsty that he enjoys. As long as it is not a health hazard, just resist looking in. Throw his clean clothing inside the door and be done with it.

edited to say: this is about picking your battles, and a clean room is just not worth fighting over.

A friend and his daughter had the battle for years...up through her teen years. They finally reached a compromise that her door was never to be left open and he wouldn't never open it or go in. I'd say she won the war.
