Food Stamps Will Stimulate the Economy More than Tax Cuts, Pelosi Says

Rep, Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), speaker of the U.S. House – Food stamps and unemployment insurance will provide more economic stimulus than tax cuts, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Tuesday during a telephone press conference.

“(F)ood stamps and unemployment insurance, which affect the people in the states, are necessary at this time when funds are short and the economy is down, (and) actually have the most stimulative effect on the economy,” Pelosi said. “Food stamps first, unemployment insurance next, infrastructure after that, and it goes on from there.”

“Actually, those investments bring a bigger return than the tax cuts,” she said, adding: “but tax cuts where we have them – to the middle class – we think will give us our biggest return.”

During the press conference, Pelosi laid out the contents of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which is expected to be passed in the House Wednesday.

The 20-minute news conference also included Govs. Edward Rendell (D-Pa.) and Jim Douglas (R-Vt.).

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will devote $20 billion to “provide nutrition assistance to modest-income families and to lift restrictions that limit the amount of time individuals can receive food stamps,” according to a summary of the plan released last week by the House Appropriations Committee.

“It’s about jobs, tax cuts and accountability,” Pelosi said of the legislation.

So San Fran Nan is advocating that those on welfare can buy rib-eye and fillet. m. steaks and eat better than the general working population or they could buy more food than they need and sell those steaks for crack cocaine. I have heard of these low life's doing that. If the government is going to provide free housing, free food, etc, it will only encourage the lazy to sit on their asses more and contribute NOTHING to the economy putting a drag on it rather than stimulating it. This woman is so f. up in the head that a brain operation would not help. We are in deep shit with mindless idiots like her along with Reid, Barney, Dodd and half a brain Biden.

At least 80% of the people I have known that rec'd food stamps have commited some type of fraud with them. From paying babysitters, buying drugs or selling them at a reduced cost to family members.

well it is stimulus . . . just not economic stimulus - it's a stimulus to the growth of the democratic base.

Are they transferable? I don't think I've ever know anyone on food stamps, let alone been able to figure what percentages of them do. :o

They are not transferable but bartering food purchased with food stamps into other tangible personal property or services is a common occurrence. The Feds thought that an electronic means of distribution of food stamps rather than the booklets would curtail the transfer of booze, cigs and drugs but they were wrong.

If comrade Pelosi said it, then it must be true.

“It’s about jobs, tax cuts and accountability,” Pelosi said of the legislation.

It's against the law to transfer them. But that does not stop the fraud.
