#1 Republicans Pick Steele as Next Party Chairman01-30-2009, 09:47 PM
This is good news for the GOP. :D
Republicans Pick Steele as Next Party Chairman
The Republican National Committee has picked Michael Steele, a black man from a traditionally Democratic state, to be the new face of the party as the GOP forges a revival following a second straight electoral drubbing.
Steele, a former Maryland lieutenant governor, won the chairmanship Friday after six rounds of voting in which five candidates were competing. He becomes the first black chairman of the Republican Party just days after President Obama became the nation's first black president.
Steele delivered a rousing speech after winning the race, pledging to re-establish the Republican presence in the northeast and win elections in regions across the country.
"It's time for something completely different, and we're gonna bring it to them," he said. "Get ready, baby. It's time to turn it on."
#2 I really like Steele but...01-30-2009, 09:58 PM
Is this not going to look suspicious? I haven't even brought myself to look at what the Democrats are saying about this, but it looks on the outside to be racially motivated. I have loved hearing Steele speak for a while and don't doubt the pick at all...but the timing was ALL wrong on this one. Why was he not picked 2 years ago? That may have made a difference in where we are now.
I hate to hear all the hype about Obama being the first African-American POTUS, when all through the election we were told it was NOT ABOUT RACE. Enough is enough. i don't want to play the game...

I will confess that i don't know a lot about him, but as far as i can tell it seems like a good choice. Good speech for sure.
We need to do something different. I mean, different merely for the sake of being different is worthless, but different and better is a good thing.
Here's hoping....Hey careful man! There's a beverage here!

I agree they will bitch and moan about anything the GOP does...I'm just saying that I suspect EVERYONE'S motives now...even my own troubled party's. I wish Steele were pushed ahead a long time ago. Living in the South there are tremendous misconceptions about the Republican party. For a large part, many blacks I know don't even realize that their most basic values and principles are CONSERVATIVE and not Liberal. The racist card has been played so efficiently down here that they have no idea why they vote the way they do...except that they think democrats are not racist like republicans. I feel that moves like this one, no matter how qualified he is, will be tainted with suspicion and they won't hear his message. They fall for it one direction but not the other.
Look at what happened in the Saxby Chambliss runoff...It was a landslide b/c the black base of the democrat party never understood the importance a super majority would have meant to Obama. They still don't get it. MLK Jr. is spinning in the grave."As a liberal has been telling me for 8 years..."DISSENT IS PATRIOTIC"

I think he is a great choice. I have watched him often on Fox and he seems to know his stuff. I think his being black is just icing on the cake.

I caught Steele this morning on Fox News Sunday. Wallace asked him if Republicans don't support the stimulus package, is he worried they'll be perceived as obstructionists. Without batting an eye Steele said that when we are opposing a package we view as bad and that goes against our interests, why should we be considered obstructionists? OMG! A politician giving a short, concise and straight answer to a question!
I've liked Steele for quite a while. It's a shame it took so long for the Republican party to recognize the contribution he could make on a national level.Better to die on your feet than live on your knees.

The left will see this as being about race. I see this as being about values. This is conservatives taking back the party.Stand up for what is right, even if you have to stand alone.

I am thrilled with this choice. He is articulate, bright and a true conservative.
How about a Palin/Steele ticket in 012. Half a brain Biden would not stand a chance against him in a debate.
