Groundhogs disagree over length of winter

NEW YORK (AFP) — Don't mothball the overcoats yet: groundhog Punxsutawney Phil, America's favorite, furriest weather forecaster, announced Monday that winter will last another six weeks.

Groundhog.org, official website of the bizarre tradition in a small Pennsylvania town that gets international attention, reported: "Phil Says 'Six More Weeks of Winter!'"

The forecast is based on whether the marmot, after being woken from hibernation each February 2, can see his shadow. If he does, spring is another six weeks away. If not, winter is over.

AUGUSTA, Ga. - The groundhog prognosticators awoke this morning and gave us mixed signals for the next six weeks of weather. Punxsutawney Phil, the grandfather of groundhog prognosticators, awoke early this morning in Punxsutawney, Penn., and declared six more weeks of winter. Closer to home, General Beauregard Lee of the Yellow River Game Ranch in Lilburn, Ga., emerged to prognosticate a more enticing "early spring."
