Specter could be 'toast' in 2010 election, pollster says

HARRISBURG -- A new statewide poll shows 53 percent of Pennsylvanians -- and 66 percent of Republicans -- want someone to replace Sen. Arlen Specter.

Asked whether they think Specter, a Philadelphia Republican, has done his job well enough to win re-election or whether they'd prefer a "new person" in that job, registered voters by a 53-38 percent margin said it's time to give someone else a chance, according to the poll by Susquehanna Polling and Research. Eight percent were undecided.

The numbers might reflect Specter's vote as one of three Republican senators who enabled passage of President Obama's $787 billion federal stimulus package, said James Lee, president of Harrisburg-based Susquehanna polling. But they reflect long-standing dissatisfaction among Republican conservatives with Specter's record, he said.

Time to retire anyone with more than two terms in the senate and 4 in the house.

There is a constitutional limit on presidential terms, perhaps there should be a constitutional limit on terms for representatives and senators? I mean hell...Kennedy has been in office since 1962...Robert Byrd since 1959...been a while...last i checked, the average retiring worker works at their job for30ish years....not Sen Byrd's 50. (not to say that it hasn't happened in other fields...just not very often)

You mention only Democrat examples, but the Republicans have theirs as well - ol' Strom for 47 years, Ted Stevens for 40, Pete Domenici for 36....

Could it be that you are too stupid to know that Strom, Stevens and Domenici are no longer serving in the Senate while 2/5 Kennedy and white sheets Byrd are.

We need CITIZEN legislators - not a protected political class. As long as we have career politicians we have a priviledged political class. This should not be.

In defense of Byrd - he at least cares about the constitution. He voted AGAINST giving DC reps a vote.

So they didn't serve terms of 47, 36 and 30 years?

So, it only matters if it is happening now? And happening on the D side of the aisle? Talk about stupid. :p

I merely mentioned the senior and second senior senators. Not my fault they fell to the liberal wayside. Doesn't matter if they are republican or democrat...the government was not established with career politicians in mind. Being a politician is not supposed to be a coveted position, rather its a position in which people should disdain from being in due to the enormous responsibility and stress that is supposed to accompany the position.

I have no ambition to govern men; it is a painful and thankless office.
    Thomas Jefferson

If its such a painful and thankless office...then why are people spending an entire generation (or close to it) in office??
