Decent piece on how some people are murdering the language one word at a time.
The latest lexical victims are "Socialism" and "Communism". The Republican and Conservative right in America now liberally apply these words to anyone who is center and center left, including all Democrats and President Barack Obama.
Here is a generous hint to my feebleminded right wing friends. It is impossible to be a Socialist or a Communist if one is not calling for the nationalization of entire industries. Now, I used a lot of big words there that right wingers reading this may not understand, so I will make my hint even easier to comprehend (note: comprehend means "understand"). If a government or a leader of a government is not taking over complete ownership and control of every business that has a certain function (i.e. does similar things), then you do not have a government or government leader that is Socialist or Communist. There is a similar relationship with property rights. If a government or leader is not advocating or actively taking private property rights away from people, you don’t have a Socialist or Communist government or leader.
Socialism refers to a broad set of economic theories of social organization advocating public or state ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods.
Communism is a socioeconomic structure and political ideology that promotes the establishment of an egalitarian, classless, stateless society based on common ownership and control of the means of production and property in general.

Do you mean like buying your way into AIG with our money and dictating their salaries ?
Do you mean like Obama's administration dumping the CEO of General Motors ?
Do you mean telling what type of goods to make ?
This sure sounds like Socialism to me sweetie !

SOCIALISM -
n.
1. Any of various theories or systems of social organization in which the means of producing and distributing goods is owned collectively or by a centralized government that often plans and controls the economy.
2. The stage in Marxist-Leninist theory intermediate between capitalism and communism, in which collective ownership of the economy under the dictatorship of the proletariat has not yet been successfully achieved.Columbia Encyclopedia: socialism

socialism, general term for the political and economic theory that advocates a system of collective or government ownership and management of the means of production and distribution of goods. Because of the collective nature of socialism, it is to be contrasted to the doctrine of the sanctity of private property that characterizes capitalism. Where capitalism stresses competition and profit, socialism calls for cooperation and social service.
In a broader sense, the term socialism is often used loosely to describe economic theories ranging from those that hold that only certain public utilities and natural resources should be owned by the state to those holding that the state should assume responsibility for all economic planning and direction. In the past 150 years there have been innumerable differing socialist programs. For this reason socialism as a doctrine is ill defined, although its main purpose, the establishment of cooperation in place of competition remains fixed.
Socialism is ANATHEMA to capitalism and the free market. Gimme Smith over Marx any day!
On a side note - you have to love how someone who "claims" to be a conservative is constantly beating us up with leftist propaganda such as this - global warming extremism - etc.Stand up for what is right, even if you have to stand alone.

any action towards government control of the economy - whole sale or in part - is socialistic.

Another thread moved... Glad to see the Admins are objective and impartial.
O'Reilly thinks the way right-wing ideologues calling Obama a socialist is stupid. I guess he wouldn't be welcome here either.
Pity.
Conservatives who embrace narrow-mindedness and ignorance will not be happy.Last edited by hazlnut; 04-01-2009 at 03:57 PM.

You're both welcome here as far as I can see. Just because neither you nor O'Reilly have an active fan club on this site doesn't mean that you aren't free to post any appropriate material in any appropriate forum. If you have a legitimate complaint about your treatment here, I'd be happy to hear it in PM.
