As you may or may not know, I work on a university campus. There has been a recent problem with a move to a new building and not enough space for everything. Our department chair recently got complaints from graduate students that all this money was spent on a new building but there was no place for the grad students to even sit or photocopy exams for the professors they TA for. My direct boss sent an email to the students basically yelling at them saying that there was no place for graduate students and that they would only have a place when she decided to get around to it. I happened to mention, in passing, that the university land we were on as well as our salaries (and the professors' salaries) were paid for by the taxpayer, and the taxpayer expected the students to be treated well in return for all the money they gave us.
My boss totally freaked and told me it sounded all like right wing rhetoric. Since when has spending taxpayer money wisely been a Democrat/Republican issue? One of our students is a British socialist (obviously not a taxpayer) and even he agrees with me that taxpayer money should be spent well.
Just to let you know, this department has spent a shitload of money on all kinds of toys for its professors and a handful of grad students, but the rest of the students (and the poor undergrads) are treated like absolute crap.
