Obama: Mental distress can't justify late abortion

WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says "mental distress" should not qualify as a health exception for late term-abortions, a key distinction not embraced by many supporters of abortion rights.

In an interview this week with "Relevant," a Christian magazine, Obama said prohibitions on late-term abortions must contain "a strict, well defined exception for the health of the mother."

Obama then added: "Now, I don't think that 'mental distress' qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term."

Last year, after the Supreme Court upheld a federal ban on late-term abortions, Obama said he "strongly disagreed" with the ruling because it "dramatically departs form previous precedents safeguarding the health of pregnant women."

The health care exception is crucial to abortion rights advocates and is considered a legal loophole by abortion opponents. By limiting the health exception to a "serious physical issue," Obama set himself apart from other abortion rights proponents.

    277. Ho many 'mentally distressed' women are now serving prison terms for
murdering their children after they have been born? How many 'mentally distressed' teenage mothers have had their baby in an isolated place and left it to die? How many have taken out their 'distress' on children by basically either nelegecting them or torturing them after birth?

I would much prefer a child not be born than have them killed after birth.
It's the same damn thing you sick puke.

It seems like some people can justify anything away.
Just what I was thinking, but not about the evil "forced-birthers" you're talking about.

    292. what it tends to lead to is suicide

Sooner, or later. There is no guarantee that terminating a pregnancy will prevent suicide in a situation where the pregnancy is an exacerbating factor, but there is no justification for denying an abortion if there is a risk of suicide.
Yeah, we wouldn't want anyone dying!

Yep, the very moment, in fact until the cord is cut. Until then it's a vile parasite and totally disposable. One could barely blame God if, looking at these sorts of attitudes towards his most precious gifts, he decided to snuff humanity out once and for all.

They are against the death penalty for criminals but it's okey dokey to kill the innocent because they find it convenient.

    1. Thank you Doctor Obama. Oh wait, you're not a Doctor? Then STFU about medicine.

    :eyes:
Nobody has the right to comment on abortion unless they are a DR?

I think lefty is just bothered that a baby might not be killed prior to the umbilical cord being snipped.
