Okay. Time Trials 101. Riders start at 1 minute intervals and ride the set course flat out. It is physically grueling. It is a 100 percent test of the individual rider. (There are team time trials but this is not one.)

A surprise winner today:Stefan Schumacher. Took the Mellow John from a Frenchman. Nice.

Basically, as an American Cyclist, you root for:

    1. An American.

    2. A Brit, Aussie, or Kiwi. (and maybe some others)

    3. Anyone else who can beat the French.

The worst thing in the world is for a Frenchie to win the Tour. The next worse thing is for a Frenchie to win the stage run on Bastille Day.
