Tapes Reveal Nixon’s View of Abortion

WASHINGTON — On Jan. 23, 1973, when the Supreme Court struck down state criminal abortion laws in Roe v. Wade, President Richard M. Nixon made no public statement. But privately, newly released tapes reveal, he expressed ambivalence.

Nixon worried that greater access to abortions would foster “permissiveness,” and said that “it breaks the family.” But he also saw a need for abortion in some cases, such as interracial pregnancies.

“There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white,” he told an aide, before adding: “Or a rape.”

Nine months later, after Nixon precipitated the resignations of two top Justice Department officials and forced the firing of the special prosecutor looking into the Watergate affair, Ronald Reagan, who was then the governor of California and would later be president, told the White House that he heartily approved.

That's unbelievable. Did Nixon say that abortion is necessary to prevent a baby like Barack Obama from being born?

Yes, because Nixon knew in 1973 that young Barack Hussein Obama would become President 35 years later.

There were probably more a-hole's like Robert Byrd in the Democrat party who fretted about mixed race babies than Republicans.

Abortion should always be available on demand (hey, it's like renting a movie!) unless they don't like your reasons for getting one. Then it's just sick. DUmmies crack me up.

what are they going to say when they finally find the gay gene and everyone starts aborting gay babies?
Stand up for what is right, even if you have to stand alone.

I'm not surprised Nixon was "ambivalent" about abortion; most Republican politicians didn't particularly care then, and it was before they felt like they had to make boilerplate statements about how bad it was. I'm disappointed, but not overly surprised, at the racist angle of his remarks.

I'm kind of disappointed in Nixon, too, for the racial comments.

As far as republicans go, I believe back in the 70s, GHW Bush and his wife were big supporters of Planned Parenthood. Before Reagan, the GOP wasn't known for being anti-abortion.
