Jail knife carriers, says Cameron

Anyone caught carrying a knife without a good excuse should expect to be sent to prison, David Cameron says.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has argued that anyone over 16 caught with an illegal knife should be prosecuted, rather than escaping with a caution.

But Mr Cameron says the presumption should go further - so anyone convicted of carrying a knife should be jailed.

Jack Straw says ministers will review sentencing guidelines on knife crime when they come into force on 4 August.

Currently, around a third of those found with offensive weapons receive only a caution or final warning.

You're right, the devil is in the details. I guess I'm a little sensitive about knives. It's what convinced me a long time ago to abandon my teaching career. I told a 16 year old hoodlum that he couldn't have a knife in the classroom. He put it to my throat. I still don't remember the size of the blade, only that it was uncomfortably close. I got him to back down, but would have been even more frightened if the administrators had warned me that he was just out of reform school. :eek:

That's when I lost my love of grammar and English lit. I didn't include it in the list in the lounge of things white people love. :D
