Starting today smokers will pay an extra $1 per pack for cigarettes.
The increase is expected to generate more than $900 million a year for cancer research and to help with the cost of Medicaid.
The increase comes just three months after a 62 cent federal tax increase.
Many health advocates are hoping the extra cost for cigarettes will encourage more smokers to quit.
