Does anyone know of someone who actually "volunteered" to go there?

Never heard of any - except maybe the commander of that B-1 that landed with his wheels up. I don’t believe he ever wanted to come home.;)
At Coretta Scott King's funeral in early 2006, Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert Kennedy, leaned over to him and whispered, "The torch is being passed to you." "A chill went up my spine," Obama told an aide. (Newsweek)

Sure, a SeaBee friend of the family has been there and lover it.He was on perimeter patrol one early morning and a loud rumbling from just offshore startled him .It was still very dark but at the end of the runway this black thing came roaring in ,It was an SR-71 returning from a mission and refueling !The food was good and full of Navy activity with a lot of 'hot' Airforce Jets landing !

I've been with my grandaughter so much, I thought this was something about Dora the Explorer.
This is bigger than presidential politics. This is a battle for America.

My Dad served there for a while in the 60's, but he most DEFINITLY did NOT volunteer to go there.
He said that it wasn't quite the ass end of the world but you could smell it from there. :D
