Not English, French or Portuguese. Spanish is the predominant language of the hemisphere in which we live.

Spanish is spoken, yes but so is French, English, Dutch and all sorts of local dialects.
Even in South America there are a few old British Colonies where English is the majority language.
Is Spanish a common tongue here. Yes. But the majority? Umm, I don't think so.
You are also ignoring a very large Populus country named Canada where English/French is the ruling language.

it will be a while before most Americans realize the benefits of being multi-lingual. Last I heard, Spanish is now the most common language in the world, although Mandarin Chinese is catching up fast.

(Try telling them having more than one language means more opportunity and more money in your pocket.)

Total immersion into the English language by immigrants and their children is the only way to go. In teaching
ESL, 95% of the immigrants attending the classes want to learn and write English. they know the advantage of
using English will advance them socially and economically. What truly amazes me is the number of immigrants
who want to then take writing courses and advanced English classes.
