CONCORD, N.H. — A Massachusetts teenager who spent three nights alone on Mount Washington in April after he sprained an ankle and veered off marked trails has been fined more than $25,000 for the cost of his rescue.Scott Mason had been praised for utilizing his Eagle Scout skills — sleeping in the crevice of a boulder and jump-starting fires with hand sanitzer gel. But authorities say he wasn't prepared for the conditions he encountered and shouldn't have set out on such an ambitious hike."Yes, he'd been out there in July when you could step across the brooks. And people have been...

what next? the city is going to start charging banks and businesses that get robbed, or wind up having shootouts, for the price of gas and ammo the police use? Asinine...completely asinine

if rescue services have to come get you because you were stupid enough to go into bush unprepared, ill equipped, and with no idea of what had to be done in case everything went wrong, then yes he should be charged.

Valuable time and resources are used to find this fool who should have known better,(an Eagle Scout?) puling them from proper duties and other lives that could have been saved.,

Some years ago here, a school sent out a bushwalking party and they got lost..massive manpower including volunteers went to find them. They had no warm clothing, little food, little water and the wrong map.

A year later: the same thing happened, this time the fucking moron schooteacher tried to do a starlight nav exercise...only this jackass cant read stars and guess what...they got lost

Enter the volunteer rescue again with helicopters, police, dogs and other emergency personnel to find them. Same issue, no gear...and the teacher was an idiot who didnt know where he was and couldnt read a damned map.

    A year later?

    NOT AGAIN?

Yep...and ths time the school was told that if they had to send a call out, pulling staff away from their duties, pulling volunteers away from work and their families, that they would face a massive bill.

Know how much it costs to run a chopper for an hour?

And from the rescuer workers came more than a few wishes to find the headmaster and kick his ass..as well as take that idiot teacher aside for a few well chosen words on his parentage, his brains and a fervent wish from all of us that he not reproduce.

We in rescue are here to save lives...we ARE NOT here to spend our valuable time and resources rescuing some fucking idiot who hasnt the brains to properly prepare for any trip they may take in the bush.

And if this guy is an Eagle Scout, then he's the stupidest one in existence. Corwin I might also add that rescue staff do also get injured in these search and rescue operations, and that many volunteers are putting their time and their energy into this rescue, no one pays them.

Rescue is a service for saving lives that are genuinely in danger, not as an ambulance service for the terminally stupid.

Make the moron pay for the rescue, might teach the little shit a lesson he should already have known

    BE PREPARED.

He is a kid! Wait till he grows up and realizes he will have to spend the rest of his life paying of the debt our generation and the generation before us saddled him with. That will teach him!

Ever hear of Mount Washington? You do not go up that mountain, alone. Much less, venture off of the trails...

I am a Texan and have read a lot about Mount Washington.

That is my sentiments. He is a kid for Christ sakes. If he had NOT been a Boy Scout, I wonder if this fine would have been assessed. Just saying because some of those liberal Freaks hate the Scouts.

If someone gets themselves in a pickle by doing something stupid - like going on a hike completely unprepared or rafting on a river during a flood - etc - they should definitely foot the bill. We need to stop rewarding and covering for stupidity.

Then charge his parents for being derelict in their duties.
