The only recent serviceman I can poll is my SIL, who was in the Marines in Bosnia & the first Gulf War. In his mind, he would NEVER fire on American citizens because (A) they represent the Constitution he swore to uphold and (B) any officer who asked him to do so would, in fact, be an enemy of the state.

He is very clear in his assessment of WHO the state is - it's the people, not the government.
