Want to make a big move off of oil (foreign and domestic), create a bunch of jobs, and be green all at once?
Electrify every mile of railroad track in this country with nuclear electricity. A decent-sized freight train uses 100,000 gallons of diesel to cover the distance from the port of Los Angeles to Santa Fe, NM. That happens every day, often multiple times a day. What do these locomotives do? Why, they burn diesel to create, you guessed it, electricity to actually drive the train.
Provide the electricity, practically for free, to those trains, and build catenaries over the train tracks, and alllll that diesel that gets burned up suddenly doesn't get burned up. This would put a huge dent in oil consumption in the US, it would reduce pollution dramatically, this would actually create jobs that create wealth and actually have some tangible value, instead of the damn flashlight brigades of Obama's "army of volunteers," and it would be good for the country as a whole to ensure that our heaviest overland hauling is not subject to some Middle Eastern or Venezuelan oil embargo. Plus, it would put a gigantic dent in oil demand and drive down prices strongly.Olde-style, states' rights conservative. Ask if this concept confuses you.
