You are working in higher ed so the answer to that is "No". No advice you receive from people in "normal" industries or professions can prepare you for the nightmarish hot-house environment of higher ed. My husband has been in the game for decades.

Moo's advice given in jest comes closest to the reality. You need to have a detailed plan and set of concrete goals. You need to see yourself first and everybody else last because they will cut your throat without a second thought. You also need to lie constantly about your common sense, religion, politics, and views on popular culture. Either that or develop such a rarefied and socially intimidating personality that no one solicits your views for the usual purity tests.

You should read Mike Adams' articles and book as though your very soul depended on it.

Mr. Snaps survives and thrives because his area is technical, arcane, and of no possible interest to gays, feminists, or bitter menopausal women.
