(KMOV)—An Imperial man is dead after accidentally shooting himself in the head while teaching his girlfriend firearm safety.
According to Sheriff Oliver Boyer, deputies responded to 4307 Rock Valley Court in Imperial, Missouri on Friday for an accidental shooting. According to the investigation, 40-years-old James Looney was teaching his girlfriend firearm safety.
According to the witness, Looney would show the different safety mechanisms, put the gun to his head, and ask if the gun would go off. Looney apparently did this with two other weapons and varied safety mechanisms, before the last one went off.
Looney was transported to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next morning.
According to witnesses, Looney was going to take his girlfriend to the shooting range the next day, but insisted on firearm safety the day prior.
Authorities said alcohol was a factor.

1.) Treat every weapon as if it were loaded.
2.) Never point the weapon at anything you do not intend to destroy.
3.) Keep the weapon on safe until you are ready to fire.
4.) Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire.
Two of these four rules had to of been broken in order for an accident like this to happen regardless of 'safety measures'. I know government would like to leave your safety up to the machine, but when it comes to firearms, the biggest safety measure is the human brain's ability to comprehend and follow four rules.
In this case, I'm guessing all four basic safety rules were violated
1.) He didn't treat the weapon as if it were loaded, else he wouldn't have put it up to his head unless he was suicidal.
2.) He pointed the weapon at his head, which, unless suicidal, was not something he was willing to destroy.
3.) If the gun went off due to trigger depression, it was most certainly not on safe.
4.) His own hand pulled the trigger which means his finger wasn't straight and off the trigger, because, unless suicidal, he didn't intend to fire.
Four simple rules, when religiously applied, will beat any government regulated safety system hands down. One must violate half the rules in order to injure themselves.
