Myth of Consensus Explodes: APS Opens Global Warming Debate
Michael Asher (Blog) - July 16, 2008 9:35 PM
Viscount Monckton gives a presentation during the 2007 Conference on Climate Change"Considerable presence" of skeptics
The American Physical Society, an organization representing nearly 50,000 physicists, has reversed its stance on climate change and is now proclaiming that many of its members disbelieve in human-induced global warming. The APS is also sponsoring public debate on the validity of global warming science. The leadership of the society had previously called the evidence for global warming "incontrovertible."
In a posting to the APS forum, editor Jeffrey Marque explains,"There is a considerable presence within the scientific community of people who do not agree with the IPCC conclusion that anthropogenic CO2 emissions are very probably likely to be primarily responsible for global warming that has occurred since the Industrial Revolution."]
The APS is opening its debate with the publication of a paper by Lord Monckton of Brenchley, which concludes that climate sensitivity -- the rate of temperature change a given amount of greenhouse gas will cause -- has been grossly overstated by IPCC modeling. A low sensitivity implies additional atmospheric CO2 will have little effect on global climate.

Interesting news. I am still not sure what to believe with all the conflicting information but one thing that amazed me was how fast the global warming side wanted to cut off further debate on the issue and toss out the validity of any study that did not match their own views. Comparing those that questioned to global warming to Holocaust deniers etc, it is simply insane on top of being bad science.

After seeing that gas bag on the back of that cow, I don't know.
At Coretta Scott King's funeral in early 2006, Ethel Kennedy, the widow of Robert Kennedy, leaned over to him and whispered, "The torch is being passed to you." "A chill went up my spine," Obama told an aide. (Newsweek)

Or not... http://www.aps.org/policy/statements/07_1.cfm
If you read past the sensationalist headline in the article, you'll see that this is all much ado about a forum post of all things.... a forum post... doesnt look like the APS is doing much of anything here.
National Policy
07.1 CLIMATE CHANGE
Email | Print
(Adopted by Council on November 18, 2007)
Emissions of greenhouse gases from human activities are changing the atmosphere in ways that affect the Earth's climate. Greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide as well as methane, nitrous oxide and other gases. They are emitted from fossil fuel combustion and a range of industrial and agricultural processes.
The evidence is incontrovertible: Global warming is occurring. If no mitigating actions are taken, significant disruptions in the Earth’s physical and ecological systems, social systems, security and human health are likely to occur. We must reduce emissions of greenhouse gases beginning now.
Because the complexity of the climate makes accurate prediction difficult, the APS urges an enhanced effort to understand the effects of human activity on the Earth’s climate, and to provide the technological options for meeting the climate challenge in the near and longer terms. The APS also urges governments, universities, national laboratories and its membership to support policies and actions that will reduce the emission of greenhouse gases.

Another global warming claim is the rising sea levels from melting sea ice. If all sea ice was to melt, ocean levels would not rise one inch, mm or cm.

As I predicted, Mr. Asher has retracted his claim that the APS changed its position on global climate change...
Updated 7/17/2008
After publication of this story, the APS responded with a statement that its Physics and Society Forum is merely one unit within the APS, and its views do not reflect those of the Society at large.

What is Mr. Asher's problem? Is he a sloppy journalist? I don't believe he is. I suspect that Mr. Asher is putting out misinformation about climate change with the hope of getting Daily Tech articles cited at sites like Drudge Report.Last edited by The Night Owl; 07-18-2008 at 03:02 PM.
