The Taser electric stun-gun's image as a possibly deadly incapacitating weapon took something of a knock this weekend, as it emerged that a man in Colorado - having himself been Tased - was then able to respond using his own Taser to deliver a retaliatory zapping.

News reports indicate that the kilovolt shootout took place in Boulder, Colorado, in the alley behind a Mexican restaurant named "Mamacitas".

One of the electric gunslingers was Harvey Epstein, owner of Mamacitas, who squared up to a pair of private security guards named Robert Streiff and Casey Dane.

It appears that Streiff aroused Epstein's anger by clamping his car - supposedly because it was blocking a bin and obstructing the alley. Epstein, however, contends that he had parked the vehicle legally on his own property.

The dispute escalated, drawing in Dane, and accounts from this point differ. The two security guards contend that Epstein first menaced them with a pair of boltcutters and then went for his Taser, zapping Dane.

But, so far from leaving the security man thrashing in the dirt, the cattleprod strike was ineffective.
    snip.

Epstein, for his part, says he never brandished the boltcutters in a threatening way, intending merely to remove the car clamp with them.

Then Dane "pointed a stun gun at my mother's face and I immediately responded with my personal Taser," he told the Boulder Daily Camera.

Dane admits that he did cover Mrs Epstein at one point, but says this was only after her son was down. Apparently the plucky mother picked up her fallen son's weapon, which still had its wires attached to Dane, presumably to administer a further jolt.

The Epsteins also say the the security guards drew lethal firearms once Mr Epstein was down; the rentacops claim they never cleared leather with their ordinary pistols. Responding police arrested Mr Epstein and charged him with "felony menacing and use of a stun gun during commission of a crime", according to the Camera. He was later released on bail.

Tasers generate an automatic time log whenever they are discharged, which should make it possible to determine just who, in fact, shot first.

Overall, however, the incident probably won't be seen as a marketing plus by Taser International (suggested new brand: "The House of Flying Cattleprods") as it would seem to suggest limited puissance on the part of Mr Epstein's weapon at least.

See, this is why we need to legalize weed right now!

No way those idiots would have dueled with tasers next to a Mexican restaurant if they'd been high. They would have been in the restaurant eating chips and salsa. :D

Couldn't we first try a little rational law enforcement. What were the security guards guarding in the alley in the first place.

If Epstein was the owner doesn't that give him the right to park his car on his property in the alley ?

Did the security guards know who he was and did they try and find out if he had a right to park there ?

Who do these security guards work for and where do they get the right to 'clamp' anyone's car.

Lets see, we have security guards armed with both stun guns and firearms patrolling someones Else's property and assaulting him and threatening his family and the cops lock up the property owner ?Whats wrong with this picture ?

THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE TASERED

Ta Da the plot thickens !

In Boulder, Colorado, two men stood looking at each other, staring into one another’s eyes, waiting for the other to draw. Cue music from old Clint Eastwood, spaghetti western.

Our story begins with a dispute. They always do. Harvey Epstein, a restaurant owner and Casey Dane, a supervisor for Security Services Inc. got into an argument over a metal boot that had been placed on one of the restaurant employee’s van.

Showdown! Dane told police he was afraid Epstein was going to hit him with a 60 centimetre-long pair of bolt cutters.

Epstein told police he had only tried to remove the boot with the bolt cutters and hadn’t threatened anyone with them. Epstein told police Dane put his hand on a holstered pistol and threatened to shoot him.

Dane told The Associated Press by telephone that he did put his hand on the holstered pistol but never threatened to shoot Epstein. Have we sorted this all out yet?

No, the best is yet to come. The two had a standoff. They stared into each other’s eyes. Then they drew… tasers. Both hit their mark. Both twitched uncontrollably. Both went down.

“They shot each other,” said Police Sgt. Pat Wyton. “It was just kind of a bonehead deal.”

    Neither men needed medical attention.

The security guard says that the van was parked in an area he was told to patrol. The employee says it wasn’t. So the argument rages on.

Police arrest man after stun gun incident

Boulder Police arrested a 36-year-old Longmont man after he got into a fight with a security guard who had put a boot on his illegally parked car on Saturday night.

The suspect, Harvey Epstein, is accused of threatening two guards with a pair of bolt cutters and using a stun gun on one of them. One of the guards also deployed a stun gun during the altercation.

Officers were called to the dispute at about 7 p.m. They located the suspect, two security guards and several witnesses in the alley west of 1149 13th St., behind Mamacita's restaurant.

Investigation revealed that Epstein, a manager of Mamacita's, got into a confrontation with Robert Streiff, a guard with Colorado Security Services who had been hired to patrol the parking lot. Streiff had placed a boot on Epstein's van because it was blocking a trash container and protruding part way into the alley.

When Epstein discovered the boot, he became irate and demanded that Streiff remove it. When Streiff refused, Epstein went inside to get a pair of bolt cutters. According to Streiff, Epstein held the cutters above his head and threatened Streiff, then began trying unsuccessfully to remove the boot himself.

The situation escalated further after Streiff called for assistance from his supervisor, Casey Dane. When Dane arrived, Epstein was again holding the cutters above his head and making threatening statements.

Witnesses said Epstein then dropped the cutters, pulled out a stun gun and fired it at Dane. Dane was shocked twice by the weapon, once in his left forearm and once in his torso.

Dane responded by pulling out his own stun gun and firing it at Epstein. When police arrived, Epstein was handcuffed and on the ground.

Epstein was arrested for investigation of felony menacing and use of a stun gun during the commission of a crime. The arrest report number is P08-6541. A mugshot is available at the Boulder County Jail.

Neither security guard was charged in connection with the incident.
