My 9 year old son started asking me about hippies the other day. Apparently, he heard some references to them on TV and a neighbor jokingly himself one (he's not). My son asked if they were bad people. I try to keep the harsh politcal opinions away from my son. I figure that he need not worry about such stuff at his age. There will be plenty of time for that later in life. I told him the truth without being political. I told him that they do tend to be unclean people but, not all of them. He asked if they do drugs. I told him that many do but, I can't say that ALL of the do. HE then asked, "the bad ones do drugs?" I had to honestly tell him "YES."
I don't want him to think that ALL such people are bad. However, he does need to know what can make anyone a bad person.
When I was his age (in August of 1971), we went on a family trip to California. There was some big concert out there that hippies from everywhere were trying to get to. They were hitch hiking everywhere you looked. Even though my Dad was a staunch blue collar Democrat, he didn't like hippies at all. I remember him telling us kids, "Don't even look at them, they're not human.":D
