MOSCOW — Russia on Friday unveiled a new fighter aircraft touted as a rival of the US F-22 stealth jet and developed amid the highest secrecy as part of a plan to modernize the armed forces.

The fifth generation fighter, manufactured by the Sukhoi company and known as the PAK FA, made a maiden flight of just over 45 minutes at the firm's home base of Komsomolsk-on-Amur in the Far East region.

"The flight lasted 47 minutes during which all the aircraft's systems were tested. It was successful," Sukhoi spokeswoman Olga Kayukova told AFP. "This is the first time it has been unveiled."

Pictures broadcast on state television showed the fighter jet -- which has been kept closely under wraps for years -- flying at altitude and then landing on a snow-surrounded runway.

"The aircraft performed well in all stages of the flight programme. It is easy and comfortable to pilot," said Sergei Bogdan, the pilot for the flight, in comments published on the Sukhoi website

Well they wouldn't have built it if we didn't have the F-22...

We could say they are spending like drunken sailors. That would be unfair to drunken sailors, they're spending their OWN money.

The F-22 is the only US fighter design with the stealth, speed and agility to defeat the new Russian PAK-FA design.

Interesting read, but alot of boomer tech specs that I'm clueless on. Any pilots around may get what they authors are saying...

Can't tell from the pics, but Sukhoi has had thrust vectoring on their planes for quite a while.

There's an interesting part of Coont's new book "Disciple' about a 'dog fight' between an F-22 and a Mig-29 .Acording to Coonts the F-22 can out turn, out roll and generally pull tighter turns than the Mig-29 is able.

They have a number of Mig-29's at 'Dream Land' they use to 'dog fight' the latest American aircraft against and I'm sure the F-22 has been there and has been scored against .

From what I've read, it's kinda a copy of both the F-22 and the YF-23. Why waste all the money designing a new fusalege when you can just copy one?
In most sports, cold-cocking an opposing player repeatedly in the face with a series of gigantic Slovakian uppercuts would get you a multi-game suspension without pay.

In hockey, it means you have to sit in the penalty box for five minutes.

That doesn't show vectored thrust nor is it infrared stealthy,it has straight engine exhausts. The F-22 has heat spreading Vectored thrust deflectors in the thrust stream. It's highly reduced thermal signature is part of its stealth . Take a Look at the exhaust clamshells !
