But her salary is now in the direct line of fire, network insiders explain, and a populist backlash against Couric's cash is said to be forming inside the newsroom."She makes enough to pay 200 news reporters $75,000 a year!" demands a veteran producer. "It's complete insanity."

Couric's $300,000 a week paycheck has become the obsession of disgruntled CBS staff, just as deep layoffs rock the fishbowl.

Dozens of employees -- including staff members in D.C., San Francisco, Miami, London, Los Angeles and Moscow -- are being let go, the NEW YORK OBSERVER reports.

I couldn't care less about Couric or broadcast news shows but this is interesting for other reasons. In the article, people are quoted drawing a parallel between the seemingly inflated salaries of financiers and the salary of a newsreader. If people start putting this together, we can expect a conversation about celebutard pay-outs and sports figures next.

Just because a salary value is set at a certain level for a time, it doesn't mean that the value can't ever change. Inflated salaries for actors and athletes are pretty new in the big scheme of things. They could get rolled back if the public no longer assigns them that value. :)

I agree that griping about the bankers should logically lead us to look at other insanely overpaid folks (like our elected representatives) , but the argument can be made that the sports superstars and movie stars are paid according to what they bring in. I don't like that people make millions of dollars a year for throwing a ball around, but will admit that they bring in much more than that to the team and the city in ticket sales, merchandise, services in the city, et al, making it a realistic investment. Does Couric draw in enough ad revenue and/or viewers to CBS to be worth that kind of salary, or are we looking at delusions of granduer on her part and a tootsie pop wrapper over CBS's head on the other part?
